Every year the c.e.m (Movement Center) proposes several ways of inhabiting public space, inviting those who live and run through the city of Lisbon in order to make a meeting point. The MicroDanceParty brings to the street a sence of Party celebration of tradicional portuguese music and dancing for anyone from all ages and genders that desires to join in. This year dancing is going to go up and down of Mouraria, then it goes to River Tejo and Cais do Sodre till the Road that has 5 names, also called Boavista.

Beste vrienden en familie,

het is bijna zover! Madalena en ik verheugen ons er zeer op. Het goede nieuws is dat de groep uit Nederland de grootste groep is op het feest, hetgeen mij zeer trots maakt. Ik heb ook persoonlijk tegen Mark Rutte en Jan Kees de Jager gezegd dat er geen extra steun naar Portugal hoeft, aangezien na ons bezoek de Portugese economie er weer boven op komt.

Handige tips voor het reizen:
•Van luchthaven naar de stad:
--> Taxi= er is een taxilus net buiten de aankomsthal waar ook enkele taxi busjes tussen staan. De kosten zijn circa €20 naar de stad. E.e.a. is afhankelijk van omstandigheden, zo wordt voor bagage wordt een toeslag gerekend en in weekend en nacht zijn de tarieven hoger. Tip! vraag vooraf naar de prijs/tarieven.
--> Openbaar Vervoer= net buiten de aankomsthal is ook de vertrekplaats van de Aerobus. Hiervoor kunnen de kaartjes op de bus gekocht worden €3,50 voor een enkeltje en €5,50 voor een retour. De bus rijdt van 0700 tot 2300 uur iedere 20 minuten van het vliegveld naar Cais do Sodré (het OV knooppunt van de stad). De bus komt ook langs de Avinda da Libertade, waar veel hotels gelegen zijn (waaronder het VIP Eden hotel bij de bus stop Restaudores). Zie daarvoor bijgevoegd plaatje Bijlage 1 Aerobus van vliegveld naar Cais Sodré inc namen vd stops met hotels. •Let wel op: er is een tijdverschil van 1 uur met Nederland.

Tips voor het bezoek in Lissabon:
•Zie bijgevoegd bestand: Bijlage 2 Tips voor Lissabon
•Voor informatie over het OV in de stad Lissabon kun je naar de website: www.carris.pt . Op de website is ook een Engelse versie met enige informatie beschikbaar. Er zijn op verschillende punten in de stad (Cais Sodré, metrostations, Elevador de Santa Justa, ed) plaatsen waar je OV-passen kunt verkrijgen voor het gehele OV. De trams zijn daarbij een leuke belevenis. Overigens geldt dat tramlijnen allemaal een E achter het lijnnummer hebben, voor de naam Electrico (tram op zijn Portugees), bijvoorbeeld lijn 28E naar Castelo Sao Jorge. Er is ook een uitgebreid me metro netwerk.
•Let wel op met je waardevolle spullen, net als in iedere grote stad, zijn ook hier zakkenrollers actief.
•Een andere tip is om je goed in te smeren met zonnebrandcreme, vooral tussen 1200-1500 dan is de zon het felst (hetgeen overigens voor Portugezen de tijd is om te gaan lunchen), een goede zonnebril te dragen en op comfortabele schoenen te lopen, aangezien de stoepen niet altijd even vlak zijn.

Programma 2 juni:
•10.45 uur worden alle gasten uit Nederland verwacht op het treinstation Belem. Dit treinstation staat in goede verbinding met Cais do Sodré, het OV knooppunt van de stad. Daarnaast is het station vlakbij de trouwlocatie. Zie Bijlage 3 Afbeelding van trouw en verzamellocatie op 2 juni om 10.45 uur
•11.00 uur koffie bij een restaurant in de buurt van de kerk
•13.00 uur trouwerij bij de kerk
•14.00 uur foto's maken
•14.30- 15.30 uur ieder is dan even vrij om te doen en laten wat hij/ zij wil. Een tip is om de omgeving van Belem te bekijken of lekker wat te nuttigen om terrasjes in de buurt.
•15.30 vertrek naar Feestlocatie vanaf tram/ bushalte naast kerk met Tramlijn 15E (met uitstaphalte Cais do Rocha) of buslijn 727 (met uitstaphalte Rua Presidente Arriaga)
•16.00 - tot max 02.00 uur feest op locatie Cruz Vermelha (oude Rode Kruis ziekenhuis) zie Bijlage 4 Feestlocatie vanaf 1600 uur
Indien je met auto komt, er is voldoende parkeerruimte in de omgeving van de kerk de Jeronimons en er is ook privé parkeergelegenheid bij de feestlocatie Cruz Vermelha. Voor het overzicht van de verschillende locatie ten opzichte van de stad heeft Madalena een kaartje gemaakt, zie daarvoor Bijlage 5 Overzicht van de trouw en feestlocaties in de stad.

Saint Anthony, the biggest party of the city (and in all of Portugal) awaits them on the eve of June 13th so from 12th evenning. The entire population of Lisbon, and most of its surrounding suburbs, not to mention the thousands of tourists flock downtown, filling the streets with music, dancing and plenty of food such as sardines and drink. This huge block party lasts throughout the night, with food and drink stands finally shutting their doors around 5 or 6 am.

Location: The evening begins at approximately 9:30pm with the Marchas Populares parade, which starts at the top of the Marques de Pombal square and flows down the main street of Avenida da Liberdade where they end in Rossio Plaza.

Portuguese Wedding Traditions

Modern Portuguese weddings


Today more than 99% of all Portuguese are Roman Catholic and most weddings over the past 30 years or so have been patterned after the modern religious ceremonies.

That’s not to say that there is nothing of the old customs in the modern ceremonies of today. Even today it is customary for the oldest members of the community to attend a stag party for the groom at which he bids farewell to his single life and his single friends. It is also still customary, as it was in ancient times, for friends and neighbors to lend a hand wherever they can to help with the celebration and with the wedding itself. Also, the ancient customs of the auction of the grooms tie, auction of the brides lingerie blue ribbon and passing around the bride’s shoe during the reception and stuffing it with money to help the young couple with their honeymoon and to help them start their new life together is still very much alive.

Recently, however, there has bit somewhat of a revival in the ancient wedding customs. More and more couples are now opting for the romanticism and tradition of the more ancient wedding customs handed down from generation to generation.

Past wedding traditions are enjoying a rebirth

In days past it was customary for the groom to send a friend or a relative to ask the prospective bride’s father if he could ask for the daughter’s hand in marriage. If the father agreed then the young man would formally ask for the girl’s hand in marriage and the marriage was allowed to take place.

There are a few of the old traditions which are not practiced even by couples wishing to wed the old-fashioned way. For example, there was a tradition in which the prospective bride would pretend to be a cow that needed to be recognized by its owner, her soon-to-be husband. Customs such as these are usually skipped over.

For the ceremony the traditional bride wears a white Chinese tunic covered with colorful jewels. The groom wears a dark suit, white shirt, and a stylish dark top hat. At the conclusion of the ceremony, as the bride and groom are placing their wedding bands on each other’s hand, the priest covers the couple with his stole.

Then, as the happy couple exit the church, their friends and family throw flowers and candies in the same way that other cultures toss rice or wheat. Following the ceremony the couple parades through the streets, where friends, family and even complete strangers wish them happiness in their new life together. The couple then have a quiet time together, where they traditionally drink tea and eat small cakes.

The following day the couple visit all of their wedding guests and personally thank each one for attending their wedding.

In the North coast of Portugal, in region of Minho, just close to Galiza. During the Feast of Senhora dos Aflitos in August, you can see thousands of young ladies, dressed as these two ones. The bride wears a black dress as a sign of fidelity to her future husband, and a lot of gold jewellery especially the “brincos Rainha” the famous Portuguese Queen earrings, as this is the dress she will be buried when she dies. Her bride's bunch of flowers has got a handkerchief, called "lenço dos Namorados", that she has embroidered and had given to her sweetheart before the marriage. The "Mordoma" wears red, as a symbol of youth. She is single and is always the eldest daughter in a family who is responsible for gathering funds for the feast.The bride's gold is her dowry when she gets married. Both costumes are completely embroidered. Two of the most beautiful costumes in Portugal. I hope you love them as much as I do.

Old & new traditions

Today the young couple is more likely to go to a wedding reception following the marriage ceremony. The reception is held either at a home or, more commonly today, in a restaurant. During the reception there is much traditional music, dancing, plenty of sea food and other delicacies, and much wine. Portugal is known for its wine and wedding guests are known for their frequent toasts to the happy couple.

At the reception there is much dancing and laughing and the telling of stories about the bride and the groom. There is also, traditionally, a money dance, during which young men pay for the privilege of dancing with the bride or during which the bride’s shoe is passed around the dance floor and is filled with money to help the new couple get a start in life and to have a long and happy honeymoon.

So while it is possible for a young couple to enjoy a modern wedding in Portugal, it is also becoming more and more common for weddings to incorporate some of the fun and old-fashioned values of the more ancient traditions.

There is nothing as beautiful and traditional for a wedding as Portuguese lace or embroidery: they exist from north to south and from ancient times that are stars on their wedding day. A modern marriage can have memories of the past, incorporating lace in a creative way. Using in tables, decorating spaces, cakes, brides dress, etc... a must have.

Hierbij een lijst met allerlei punten die bezocht kunnen worden:

A centrum met wijken Chiado, Bairro Alto, Alfama en Baixa
Het centrum is mooi om te zien, daar kun je ook lekker eten en genieten van Portugese cultuur. Specifieke zaken die je kunt bezoeken zijn:

1. Praça do Comércio
Dit is een plein aan de waterkant van Lissabon in het begin van het centrum. Aan dit plein zit een toerist info.

2. Castelo de São Jorge
Dit is een oud kasteel met mooi uitzicht over de stad, altijd de moeite waard. Is te bereiken met een leuk tramlijntje, ik dacht lijn 28. Op zich zijn er veel leuke tramlijntjes, omdat ze met materieel uit de jaren 20 worden verzorgd. Deze trams zijn in de jaren 90 opgeknapt en oude stijl teruggebracht. Ik weet niet meer exact waar lijn 28 vandaan vertrekt.

3. Ascensor da Bica bij Rua São Paulo en Bairro Alto
Dit is een klein liftje dat je van de lage wijk, naar de hoge wijk Bairro Alto brengt; de naam betekent letterlijk hoge wijk en is ooit door de Moren gebouwd. Hier vind je ook leuke fado restaurantjes en cafés.

4. Pavilhão Chinês
Een leuke cocktail bar is Pavilhoa Chines, waarbij je moet aanbellen om naar binnen te mogen. Er is geen deurbeleid. Het ligt aan de noordzijde van deze wijk, Rua Dom Pedro zeker de moeite waard.

5. Rossio plein
Dit is een oud plein waarbij je vlakbij de Elevador de Santa Justa hebt. Dit is een lift ooit ontworpen door Eifel (vd Eifeltoren).

6. Praca da Restaudores
Daar heb je eveneens een tram (Elevador da Gloria) die je naar de Bairro Alto kan brengen.

7. Museu do Fado, Museu Militar
Museum over Fado en Militair museum. Wordt door mensen aangeraden, maar ben er zelf nooit geweest.

8. Museum Transportes Communicoes
Museum over openbaar vervoer en communicatie. Als collega raad ik je dat aan, alhoewel ik er zelf nooit ben geweest. Locatie is pal onder de Brug van 25 april (dat was de dag van de revolutie tegen Salazar in de jaren 70).

9. Docas
Dit is een boulevard met veel cafés en restaurants aan de westzijde van het centrum. Het is het oude haven gebied aan de waterkant van Lissabon. Hier kan je ook s’avonds heerlijk dineren en later op de avond ook dansen ed.

B Bestemmingen buiten centrum van Lissabon

10. Belém
Is een wijk ca 10 km ten westen van Lissabon, is te bereiken met de trein die vertrekt vanaf Cais Sodré (soort van OV knooppunt aan de waterkant in centrum van Lissabon) of met een tram (ook leuk om te doen). Daar kun je enige musea bezoeken (zoals Centro Cultural Belem, Museum da Marinha, Museum Arte Popular) en ook enkele monumenten (Torre de Belem en Mosteiro Jeronimos).
Hier kan je, als je goed zoekt, op de hoek van het park/plein bij Belem een soort van oud pand ontdekken dat betegeld is met blauw-witte badkamertegels en ligt naast het oude kerkgebouw dat het aangezicht heeft naar het water (zie pijl). Hier worden die Pasteis de Nata verkocht. Zijn op zich heerlijke zoete hapjes en is een soort van nationale traditie van de monniken sinds de middeleeuwen.

11. Cascais
Soort van Scheveningen van Lissabon, leuk pittoresk plaatsje. Is met dezelfde trein als die langs Belém rijdt. Wel op letten: de ene trein stopt halverwege en de andere gaat tot het eindpunt. Cascais in het eindpunt.
Treinrit (ca 40 min) is op zich ook de zeker moeite waard, gaat langs mooie zeekust van Portugal. Trein stopt overigens ook in Estoril (Nachtleven Tamariz), ook klein leuk plaatsje met een zeer groot casino en strand. In Cascais kun je ook goed naar het strand. 12. Expo gebied
In 1998 was er de wereld Expo in het oosten van Lissabon. Daar is nog een aantal musea van over (zoals het Ocenarium en het Kennis museum). Ook is daar enige imposante architectuur, een groot winkelcentrum en een kabelbaan. Ook goed de moeite waard. Redelijk makkelijk te bereiken met de metro die beginnen vanaf Cais Sodré (wel moet je ergens halverwege overstappen, als ik me nog kan herinneren). Je kunt er ook komen met de trein vanaf het treinstation Santa Apolonia, dat ligt aan de waterkant aan de oostkant van het centrum.

13. Sintra
Is een monumentaal plaatsje vlakbij Cascais. Daar kun je komen met de trein vanaf Rossio, als ik het goed heb. Vraag even na bij Tourist info. Hier heb je ook allerlei leuke bezienswaardigheden: kastelen en paleizen ed. Ook de moeite waard.

Dit zijn gave nachtclubs waarvan Lux iets oostelijks van het centrum langs waterkant van Lissabon ligt, en Kremlin en Kapital in de wijk Santos liggen (iets te westen van het centrum en ook vlak bij de waterkant). De Bairro Alto is ook in avond/ nacht zeer gezellig.
